HDS contacted MESH early in 2018 to undertake a noise survey connected to unloading containerised cargo at Tilbury docks. The removal of the containerised cargo is a noisy process as it is secured by chains which are delashed by a team of typically 10 operatives. Once chains have been released a number of Port of Tilbury motorised ‘tugs’ then remove the containers from the decks.
The main source of the noise is the dropping of the chains as they are released, plus the dragging of the chains along the deck so that the tugs can gain access. In addition to the chains being dropped and dragged there are a number of ventilation fans on each deck generating noise.
MESH undertook suitable noise readings and from this advised management on what controls were required to protect the operatives hearing and to comply with the Noise at Work Regulations.
