Competent PersonS Role

Please see below examples of clients throughout the UK that Mesh have provided with competent persons services.

  1. Since 2007, MESH has been working with the UK based operations of the Discovery Channel, acting in the role of Competent Persons. From an initial brief to develop emergency response systems, the MESH involvement has evolved to ensure Discovery are consistently achieving compliance and best practice throughout Europe, The Middle East, and Africa.

    As part of this work, MESH has undertaken a detailed Health and Safety audit of the Discovery operations based out of the London office. The findings were presented in a detailed report to senior management along with a number of recommendations.

    As part of the report the recommendations were developed into a two-year action plan aimed at bringing Discovery operations to a consistent level of Health and Safety best practice.

    As requested by senior management, we have also undertaken a series of audits across eight of the operations throughout Europe. These audits have focused on both the health & safety and building operations for the sites. Full reports were completed for each site and an executive overview presented to the senior management team.
  2. MESH has undertaken the role of Competent Persons on behalf of Connexions North London. This role has involved:

    a. the provision of training for staff covering topics such as risk assessment and staff induction;

    b. updates to the Health and Safety Policy;

    c. inspections of premises to ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations.

  3. MESH currently has a contract into late 2008 to provide competent persons support to Intersnack UK Limited, based in County Durham. The role requires MESH to provide two days support per month on-site to assist the company in developing robush Health and Safety systems.

    To date this has required MESH to assist in developing Health and Safety systems such as accident reporting, policy updating, and risk assessments.

  4. Mesh Consultants have provided expert advice and undertaking of Competent Person role to Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, with 1600 students and 300 staff. MESH provides constant professional management of the existing Health & Safety system through regular attendance.

  5. MESH provides ongoing expert advice and the undertaking of the Competent Persons role to East Malling Research (EMR). EMR employs around 100 staff split between scientific and farm operations. MESH is employed on-site for two days per month to assist the in-house safety team. The benefit of this to EMR is that they have access to highly experienced competent Health and Safety expertise, at a fraction of the cost of employing in-house. MESH have revamped the H&S systems at EMR, assisted in risk assessments, attend H&S meetings, delivered extensive training and advised management on a wide range of issues.

  6. MESH was asked by a small manufacturing company to assist in a problem with the HSE that threatened the company's ability to continue trading (see dealing with the HSE). By use of our competent person services we assisted the company through a difficult period but found a solution that saved the business. MESH continues to work closely with the management.
