The law requires all employers to appoint a competent person in health and safety, and this should preferably be an internal appointment. However, for some organisations this is often not realistic and so this is where we can help.
MESH offers clients expert advice and support based upon their own individual needs. This can include working on a regular basis at the clients place of work where we take the lead in developing effective health and safety systems and train the staff. We also provide other package options where we spend an agreed number of days at the clients site carrying out inspections, policy development, staff training, risk assessments and other activities as required.
We are often asked by clients how much is involved in gaining their own competent person. The person that takes that role needs to have the appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience, and from a health and safety training perspective, the basic requirement would involve that person to have completed a training programme such as a NEBOSH certificate. Such a programme takes 17 weeks to achieve, including the passing of exams, and that person is obliged to keep their knowledge of current legislation up-to-date from that point onwards.
