MESH carry out Manual Handling Risk Assessments for companies in a diverse range of industries throughout the UK.
Our Head Office is in Kent, with regional offices located in London, The Home Counties, The Midlands, and The North East.
Over a third of 3-day lost time injuries reported to the HSE are as
a result of manual handling. Add to this the fact that a recent survey
estimated 12.3 million working days were lost due to these work-related
musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). On average, each sufferer took about
20 days off in that 12-month period.
The manual handling regulations require employers, where it is not reasonably practicable to avoid manual handling which involves a risk of being harmed to:
- Undertake risk assessment; and
- Take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to the lowest level reasonably practicable.
Manual handling injuries can occur wherever people are at work. This includes working on farms and building sites, in factories, offices, warehouses, hospitals, banks, laboratories, and while making deliveries. Heavy manual labour, awkward postures, manual materials handling, and previous or existing injury are all risk factors implicated in the development of MSDs.
Manual handling assessments need to take into consideration the risks covering the following factors, the:
- Task
- Individual
- Load
- Environment
