What does a health and safety consultant actually do?
A health and safety consultant helps your business understand, manage and meet its legal health and safety responsibilities. This can include reviewing your current arrangements, carrying out risk assessments, identifying gaps, advising on legal duties, supporting training needs and helping you put practical controls in place.
The aim is not simply to create paperwork. Good consultancy should give you clear, proportionate advice that helps protect your employees, visitors, contractors and business.
Does my business legally need health and safety support?
Every employer has legal duties to manage health and safety. Some businesses can manage straightforward risks internally, but many need competent external advice when risks are more complex or when they do not have the right knowledge in-house.
If you use machinery, hazardous substances, contractors, work equipment, flammable materials, noisy processes, or have multiple premises or employees, professional support can help you understand what applies and what action is needed.
What is a competent person in health and safety?
A competent person is someone with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to help a business manage health and safety properly. This may be someone inside your organisation, an external consultant, or a combination of both.
The key point is that the person must understand the risks involved and be able to advise on suitable, practical controls.
Can you help if we are not sure what health and safety documents we need?

Do you only provide health and safety consultancy in Kent and the South East?
No. The Safety Effect is based in Kent and undertakes a lot of work across Kent, London, Essex, Sussex and Surrey, but we also support clients throughout the UK. We have also worked with businesses that have operations in Europe.

Can you help with one-off risk assessments?
Yes. We can help with one-off assessments where you need support with a specific area of risk. This may include workplace risk assessments, COSHH, DSEAR, PUWER, fire risk, workplace noise, DSE or other health and safety concerns.
A one-off assessment can be useful when you have a particular issue, new process, new site, client requirement, insurer request or area of uncertainty.
Can you provide ongoing health and safety support?
Yes. Some businesses need more than a one-off report. Ongoing support can help you keep your health and safety arrangements up to date, review actions, answer questions, support managers and provide competent advice as your business changes.
This can be especially useful for businesses without an internal health and safety specialist.
Will health and safety consultancy create lots of unnecessary paperwork?
It shouldn’t. Our approach is practical and proportionate. The right level of documentation depends on your business, your risks and your legal responsibilities.
Good health and safety paperwork should be useful, clear and connected to real workplace controls. It should not be paperwork for the sake of paperwork.
Can you help us understand whether our current arrangements are good enough?
