I think we can often miss the importance of setting our sights at a level that helps to drive us and our business to achieve more than the ordinary. To me when clients ask for training the ordinary is accepting that ticking the compliance box is good enough. Why would you accept this when so much more can be gained!
Recently talking to another training provider we were asked to quote to deliver some specialist training on their behalf to their client. We wanted to know as much about their clients business as possible in order to specifically tailor the training. Our aim has always been to provide added value to clients and you can only do this by tuning into what they do and what their employees need to know.
Of course you can’t do this for all training and where clients send employees to open courses we accept this. However delivery in- house provides the opportunity to set the training up on a personal level if the business is prepared to share key information about its operations and it’s goals.
Sometimes we come across businesses who are protective of such information and get feedback that they just need to show their staff have received the training – the tick in the box. The case above started with can’t you just provide a generic overview to the training subject. Our answer was of course but with a little more effort you can have training that starts to change the way your staff think and behave; isn’t that infinitely more value?
Perhaps it’s worth looking at where your business sets it’s targets for training and remember don’t blame the trainer if your aim is too low.
