We work with many businesses and train managers from numerous other businesses through our IOSH and NEBOSH courses and stress to them all the importance of knowing what risk assessments are required.
It’s amazing how after an incident going wrong a business will find for all of the risk assessments in place; the one they need isn’t done or up to date. Recently we assisted a business to respond to a HSE request for information prior to an inspectors visit, after a RIDDOR incident. As the business was able to supply a comprehensive up to date risk assessment and evidence of training records, the HSE decided a visit was not needed.
However it did prompt a question to the business as to whether all activities would have been covered in the same level of detail; the answer was no. We then helped the business to create an Excel spreadsheet of what risk assessments should be in place, what were and when were they last updated. This approach has provided a great for the business to move towards getting and keeping its assessments up to date.
We find it a simple yet effective approach that any business can implement to ensure they stay health & safety compliant.
