Is health & safety providing your business with a competitive edge?

  • Attitude toward Health and Safety

April 22, 2013

If your business is in need of health & safety advice what do you look for? Do you look for a consultancy that can advise you on what the law says, or have you been looking for more than that?

Clearly, there are many consultants around that have a good knowledge of health & safety law (and some who haven’t) but can they bring more to the table?   As someone who has been a production manager in the past I understand the importance of making health & safety work for the business; rather than be a barrier to it.

Shouldn’t health & safety be based around a common sense approach?  If it was then it’s highly likely that your managers and employees would buy into what you are trying to achieve much more readily. We have found over the years that this is the case; even when these groups have initially been resistant to change.  It always amazes me how many people think that the problem with health & safety is that it just stops a business being able to operate at optimum profitability.

Our vast experience has shown us that the law is not black and white and instead tends to be grey (maybe 50 shades some might say) and is certainly open to interpretation.  Given this then there are many ways to make your business safe, healthy, compliant and competitive.

I passionately believe that all businesses should be looking to apply common sense in what they do and are doing so they will find that a competitive edge can be gained from how they apply health & safety.
