Do you arrange health & safety training for your workforce? If so, what are you getting back from it? Is the point of the training just to tick a compliance box or would you like your troops to take something away from the sessions?
It might sound like an odd question but have you really sat down and thought what the outcome should be, and to take the time to check if you are getting back what you want?
To many employees, the thought of health & safety training is going to fill them with dread and they will be going into the training with negative thoughts. The trainer needs to quickly overcome this and ensure a memorable outcome is achieved; unfortunately, not all trainers are going to be to make this happen.
If your troops are walking away without at least a couple of ideas of how they can improve their own health & safety (or the health & safety of others); then why not question what you’re paying for?
I believe that ‘inspirational’ should come as standard and that you shouldn’t spend your valuable funds without expecting this. To make this happen, the trainer has to be a great story teller, be creative, and quickly build an emotional connection with your workers. When this happens the training is more like to be shared with others and therefore lead to better recall.
So why not take the time think what is it that you want and ensure to discuss this with your trainers. Then you can make sure to check what you are getting back.
