Facilities at the Coventry plant include a number of business units involved in manufacture of components to suit an extensive range of vehicles. Hazardous substances in common use include flammable gases associated with furnace operations at two specific locations, and were identified for DSEAR risk assessment, along with the bulk Hydrogen storage arrangements within external yard.
By necessity, furnace operation may contain potential ignition sources from power supplies, hot surfaces – or sparks from static discharge for example.
The process hazard evaluation undertaken was based on survey of specific operations at the Coventry site and consideration of arrangements outlined by staff in regard to control measures incorporated into furnace activities. This took into account hazardous substance properties, ignition controls, ventilation and maintenance – plus management of discrete plant areas – and with comment relative to specific topics.
