The Regional QESH Manager approached MESH in mid 2012 to provide DSEAR services to the company; the site visit was undertaken at the end of July by Martin Moy.
The site had grown from a small start to employ over 200 persons in its 100 year history and occupies a large site in Birmingham. The business provides a repair and rewind business specialising in electrical machines, motors and generators. The repair and refurbishment operations include varnish coating of windings through a dipping process.
The key focus of the DSEAR risks throughout the site was mainly concentrated on the extensive use of flammable gases.
The assessment looked at the procedures in place to control the risks presented by using flammables and how well sources of ignition were controlled. From the report we were able to provide recommendations on a number of practical improvements the company could implement.
