Royal British Legion Industries, (Charity)

December 2012 RBLI approached MESH to assist them to update their COSHH assessments, this was following a HSE visit to RBLI.

The HSE had requested that RBLI looked at the printing inks and other hazardous substances used in the the manufacturing processes and ensured that suitable COSHH assessments were in place.

Stirling Lloyd Polychem Limited , (Tunnelling)

Stirling Lloyd requested MESH Consultants to carry out an independent COSHH assessment of its Integritank HF product; which is a waterproofing material for use inside SCL tunnels (sprayed concrete lined tunnels).

Integritank HF is a derivative of their spray applied waterproofing systems, designed specifically for safe application in confined spaces such as tunnels, caverns, shafts and mines.

The desktop study approach taken looked in detail at the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and compared the Integritank HF material with other commonly used products inside SCL tunnels; such as cement and sprayed concrete.

Givaudan - Milton Keynes, (Flavour research)

An independent COSHH audit of the Givaudan Milton Keynes site at  Milton Keynes was undertaken on September 5th at the request of Karen Neve, Facilities/Health and Safety Manager. Martin Moy and Mary Banfield, of MESH Consultants Limited, conducted the audit with co-operation of site personnel.

Many thanks for your survey and advice; this really helps us to direct our efforts.

MESH are further supporting the on-site team to implement these recommendations from the action plan through 2012/13.

Dragon LNG, (Energy)

Dragon LNG are based at Milford Haven in South Wales and on site they use a range of chemicals and gases in their engineering processes. The company had previously undertaken COSHH assessments in-house using the HSE COSHH Essentials tool but were concerned that they were missing the key COSHH compliance issues.

MESH were called onto site in 2010 to undertake a COSHH review, to develop a COSHH action plan and to develop suitable COSHH assessments for the company.

Britannia Refined Metals, (Heavy industry)

 MESH were approached by BRM to undertake a series of COSHH assessments by the safety team on site. Although the company had excellent controls in place for the safety of its employees as required by the Control of Lead at Work Regulations it did not have all of its COSHH assessments up to date.

We were given the project of working with on site personnel to address this and ensure the site was fully compliant with the requirements of COSHH. MESH are continuing to support BRM in 2011.

An independent COSHH audit of the Vantia premises at Venture Road, Southampton was undertaken at the end of October 2009 at the request of senior management. 

Vantia is a small biotechnology company with 28 employees and its core focus is on small molecule R&D. Previously part of Ferring Pharmaceuticals; Vantia was created in 2008. At Venture road they carry out medicinal chemistry on site and have biological screening capabilities.

R&R Ice Cream, (Food Manufacturing)

After working with MESH on a DSEAR project in 2012 R&R requested a PUWER survey to be undertaken of its plant at Leeming Bar, Northallerton in 2013.

The ice cream business has traditionally been supplied machinery with limited guarding to allow for operators to have close access to the conveyors etc. The Group Health & Safety Manager was concerned that this might leave the business at risk and asked for an independent review.  

 I used to describe all consultants regardless of their field of expertise as “managers” who did not want to get their feet wet!  Martin and his team dispel this with their professional attitude, and the way they conduct themselves on site, a refreshing change.

 In 2012 Celtic Technologies requested MESH to undertake PUWER assessments on its mobile plant used in the Land Remediation process. The assessment was completed in two stages; stage 1 at the Bridgend site in Wales and stage 2 at Spalding, Linconshire.

Chemring Countermeasures Ltd based at the High Post Site near Salisbury, is the base of the UK countermeasures operations of Chemring Group PLC.

DSEAR Risk Assessments

Beardow Adams, (Manufacturing)

 A visit was made to the site of Beardow Adams on 25th August 2016 to consider compliance in respect of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). The DSEAR assessment for the Beardow and Adams site included hazardous area classification.
Beardow and Adams manufactures a range of adhesives, mainly water based. Primarily the DSEAR focus was upon arrangements for handling of flammable raw materials mainly in pellet form and explosion relief of dust collection equipment fitted to extraction systems.

Cerealto, (Foof Manufacturing)

 An assessment of the Worksop site of Cerealto has been carried out July 2016 in compliance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) 2002. DSEAR compliance is mandatory in law in the UK.

Due consideration of hazardous substances present and circumstances of handling in relation to ongoing storage and transfer operations are the focus of this DSEAR risk assessment - particularly those that may lead to fire and / or explosion. Importantly DSEAR requires us to look at potential risks from the substances in use.

Hazardous area classification was carried out and the HAC zones identified.

Naturex, (Manufacturing)

 Naturex were concerned about DSEAR risks  at their factory in Overseal near Swadlincote in Derbyshire. A visit was made to the Overseal facility of Naturex on 21st March 2016.

The process takes by-products from fruit processing and concentrates them leaving flammable alcohol components concentrated up along with the fruit fragrances and flavours.

 A visit was made to the Blackburn and Shadsworth facilities of Bright Blue Foods (BBF) in December 2015 to review compliance in respect of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
The key areas to be assessed on each site was the storage, handling and processing of flour, icing sugar and flavourings across both sites.

Their headquarters is based at the East Kilbride site in Scotland where they also have a purpose-designed Vat Room for blending of whisky and other spirit-based products.

Sulzer Dowding Mills - Southampton, (Engineering)

 The Sulzer Dowding Mills group had decided to seek to achieve the OHSAS 18001 accreditation in 2013. To achieve this a proportion of the sites had to be assessed by BSI in June/July 2013 and the group management had identified sites needed to update the DSEAR assessments.

As MESH had previously undertaken the survey for the main site in Birmingham we were the preferred supplier for the other sites.

Pall Industrial Hydraulic Laboratory, (Filtration testing)

 In June 2013 the new Laboratory Manager for Pall Industrial Hydraulics based in Portsmouth requested MESH to complete a DSEAR assessment of the testing facilities.

He had identified the site DSEAR assessment had not been updated for some time and was concerned that as IPA and various oils were used under pressure that the assessment would need updating.

BIFFA Waste Services, (Waste recyling)

BIFFA Waste Services were having a new waste recycling facility facility built in Horsham, West Sussex and were required to have a DSEAR assessment completed on the safety of its extract and odour control system in relation to explosive atmospheres.

The assessment was undertaken in October 2012.

The survey could not target all hazards associated with flammable gas, vapour or dust from ongoing operations, housekeeping regimes or collection / handling of by-products while the plant was under construction.

Hazardous materials in common use include Toluene and other flammable liquids such as MEK and several areas across site were identified for DSEAR assessment. This included bulk Toluene storage.

Terex, (Manufacturing)

 An independent survey of paint shop operations at the Terex MP site, Omagh, Co. Tyrone was undertaken 21  May 2012 at the request of senior management. Gus Collins of Mesh Consultants was instructed to carry out this survey and to consider arrangements in respect of the Dangerous Substances Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR). 

The site incorporates three discrete painting facilities; most operations are carried out in large open areas of the two main paint shops. The majority of substances used in these areas contain flammable or harmful components and requiring some degree of ventilation to maintain a safe environment.

In July 2012 Lightbody of Hamilton, Scotland required their two factory units to be fully DSEAR risk assessed. The company is part of the Finsbury Foods group.

The site health & safety manager contacted MESH after searching for providers that could cover all parts of the U.K. He wanted to work with a company that could provide a clear concise report that would outline any recommended improvements; that could be presented to senior management.

 I decided to use MESH for our DSEAR and Fire Assessments after receiving a very competitive quote considering the extent of the work involved.

Broadwater Mouldings Ltd, was established in 1973 and is a subsidiary of the Betts Group of companies. The company moved to the current premises 12 months ago and operate out of a purpose built manufacturing facility with works extending to 6,500m² (70,000ft²) on a site of 17,500m² (4.3ac).

Cabot has three offices based in Kings Hill Kent, Rugby and Dublin in which around 500 employees are located. Most employees tend to spend a considerable amount of their working days at a computer workstation and therefore potentially at risk of developing long term health problems.

South African Airways, (Aviation)

MESH was employed by South African Airways to undertake a series of risk assessments covering its main activities at Heathrow airport. This involved making an assessment of all activities including those that involved working airside in the baggage handling and working around the airplanes.
