COSHH Risk Assessments
Britannia Refined Metals, (Heavy industry)
MESH were approached by BRM to undertake a series of COSHH assessments by the safety team on site. Although the company had excellent controls in place for the safety of its employees as required by the Control of Lead at Work Regulations it did not have all of its COSHH assessments up to date.
We were given the project of working with on site personnel to address this and ensure the site was fully compliant with the requirements of COSHH.
Vantia, (Research & Development)
An independent COSHH audit of the Vantia premises at Venture Road, Southampton was undertaken at the end of October 2009 at the request of senior management.
Vantia is a small biotechnology company with 28 employees and its core focus is on small molecule R&D. Previously part of Ferring Pharmaceuticals; Vantia was created in 2008. At Venture road they carry out medicinal chemistry on site and have biological screening capabilities.
Kinneir Dufort, (Product development)
Kinneir Dufort work with some of the world’s largest brands to whom they provide design expertise covering packaging, consumer products, telecommunications and commercial high technology. The company has established a reputation for user understanding, design strategy and creativity. With a comprehensive design development capability that includes high quality prototyping.
As the processes employed by the company include the use of a wide range of hazardous substances they approached MESH in September about carrying out a COSHH review of their operations out of the companies Bristol facility.
Ravensbourne College, (Education)
MESH assisted Ravensborne college to complete COSHH assessment for all hazardous substances used across the college.
Bethany Lodge, (Nursing Homes)
MESH undertook a full review of the chemicals used in the nursing homes and created the COSHH assessments.
EMR, (Horticulture)
MESH has assisted EMR Ltd to complete comprehensive COSHH assessments for its laboratory operations at East Malling Research .
ASK, (Local Government)
MESH carried out COSHH assessments for Advisory Services Kent (part of Kent County Council) in 2009. These assessments covered the office and training facilities based in East Malling Kent.
Soho Film Laboratories, (Entertainment)
MESH was approached in 2009 to undertake a full COSHH assessment on the operations of Soho Film Laboratories based in central London. We provided the company with a detailed report, a series of assessments and an action plan to improve the control of hazardous substances.
PUWER Risk Assessments
Cleveland Potash, (Mining)
Cleveland Potash requested MESH to complete a PUWER review and a series of PUWER assessments across its two sites in the North East in February 2010.
The review and assessments covered 11 workshops across the sites and involved one of our consultants spending three days on site and a further three days to complete the report and assessments for the company.
Delcam, (Manufacturing)
MESH has assisted Delcam UK, based in Birmingham to undertake risk assessments across its manufacturing and engineering workshops
Sign 2000, (Manufacturing)
MESH undertook a review of the engineering workshop to identify where improvements were needed to comply with PUWER.
Whatman International, (Manufacturing)
MESH worked with management to review the engineering workshop to identify the suitability of a range of engineering equipment being operated by staff.
M- real paper, (Manufacturing)
MESH undertook a PUWER assessment for a large paper company in Kent to review the compliance of its safety systems on a semi-automated paper sheeting machine.
DSEAR Risk Assessments
Humiseal, (Chemical)
MESH were requested to complete an independent review of the proposed layout and site arrangements at a new production facility in Rye. This review was requested by senior management of Humiseal Europe Limited.
MESH were instructed to carry out this review, and to specifically consider the production of conformal coatings at the site. Background information and plans regarding proposed layout and equipment at the site was provided by Humiseal.
Broadwater Mouldings, (Manufacturing)
An independent DSEAR survey of the Broadwater Mouldings Works site in Beccles, Suffolk was undertaken on 15th April 2010 at the request of the management team. The survey came as a result of an HSE inspection request to the company.
Broadwater Mouldings Ltd, was established in 1973 and is a subsidiary of the Betts Group of companies. The company moved to the current premises 12 months ago and operate out of a purpose built manufacturing facility with works extending to 6,500m² (70,000ft²) on a site of 17,500m² (4.3ac).
Meggitt Defence Systems Ltd, (Aerospace)
An independent survey of the site wide operations at the Meggitt Defence Systems Ltd premises at Orbital Park, Ashford, Kent was undertaken on 3rd December 2009. Meggitt Defence Systems Ltd, is a unit of Meggitt PLC, the global aerospace, defence and sensors group, who are a leading provider of weapon training systems, ammunition handling systems, environmental control systems, and countermeasures. MDS products, services and systems are used to support armed forces and security agencies worldwide.
The company has operated on the current Orbital Park site since 2006 and up to 100 persons are employed on-site.
EJ Group, (Manufacturing)
An independent DSEAR survey of the EJ Group Old Cement Works site in South Heighton, Newhaven was undertaken on 1st December 2009 at the request of the management team. The survey came as a result of an HSE inspection of the EJ Group operations.
The company develops and manufactures a range of doors and doorframes specifically designed for use by Local Authorities and Housing Associations to provide an extremely durable, high security doorset in traditional style and appearance.
Victoria Foods, (Food)
MESH was approached by the Operations Director at Victoria Foods, based in Leigh, Lancashire towards the end of 2009. The company produces dry cake mixes, batter mix etc at this site.
Because of the known explosive risks from flour based dusts the company was in need of carrying out a DSEAR assessment on the use of flour from a silo and pipe distribution system into bulk mixers.
Graphic Packaging, (Manufacturing)
MESH were asked to undertake a DSEAR assessment at the Bristol site of Graphic Packaging Limited.
Ascent Media Group, (Media)
MESH was employed by Soho Film Laboratories and Ascent 142 (part of the Ascent Media Group of companies) to review how it handled nitrate film and to determine if sufficient controls were in place to prevent any combustion or explosion of the film.
ESP Ltd, (Manufacturing)
MESH was employed by Educational & Scientific Products in 2009 to assess the DSEAR risk at its manufacturing site based in Ruslington, West Sussex. The company manufacture and sell anatomical models, skeletons, bones, medical simulators, prepared microscope slides and educational products for training purposes in health care, industry, hospitals, schools and universities.
Sarena Manufacturing, (Manufacturing)
MESH was employed by Sarena Manufacturing Ltd in 2009 to assess the DSEAR risk at its manufacturing site in Gillingham, Kent. The company has a proud history of serving the utilities and the building services industry with fibreglass tanks for the storage and distribution of water.
Jobling Purser, (Manufacturing)
MESH was employed by Jobling Purser Ltd based at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in January 2009 to complete a DSEAR assessment of its operations. The company develop and manufacture a range of commercial road-surfacing and maintenance compounds at its site.
Fragrance Oils Limited, (Chemical)
Fragrance Oils Limited needed to determine whether areas of their Manchester plant were DSEAR compliant. MESH Consultants helped the company understand where they were in relation to this complex set of regulations.
DSE Risk Assessments
Sims Claims, (Insurance)
SIMS Claims Service approached MESH in the second half of 2009 to provide a DSE assessment service to staff where a professional ergonomic review was deemed necessary. We have continued to provide support during 2010.
SIMS Claims Services is a claims management service provider to the insurance market and operates out of two office locations, one in Tunbridge Wells and the other in Tonbridge, Kent.
EMR, (Horticulture)
MESH has carried out a number of DSE assessments as part of the consultancy it has provided to East Malling Research (EMR).
Groundsure, (Environmental)
MESH has worked with Groundsure a Brighton based Environmental consultancy, with around 40 office-based staff working predominately at their computers. to complete DSE assessments.
Thales Avionics Ltd, (Aerospace)
MESH worked with Thales Aerospace at their Crawley site of over 600 people to complete follow up DSE assessments.
Discovery Channel, (Media)
MESH sourced and project managed the introduction of an on-line DSE training and assessment system for Discovery. We have continued to support Discovery by completing the follow up assessments as necessary.
Modem Media, (Information Technology Design)
MESH were called in by Modem Media, who were concerned that a number of staff were suffering with health problems that may have been linked to the ways in which they used their workstations.
Fire Risk Assessments
GE Healthcare, (Manufacturing)
MESH were asked to complete a series of fire risk assessments to cover the GE Healthcare site in Maidstone, Kent. The site incorporates a wide range of buildings and storage facilities.
The site was split into seven sections in order to complete suitable assessments for the various buildings and activities housed in each area.
Bethany Lodge, (Nursing Homes)
MESH worked with the management of Bethany nursing homes to undertake a full review of the risk assessments they had in place. Positive comments were received by the home on the risk assessments, following a routine inspection by the health authorities.
Ravensbourne College, (Education)
MESH has undertaken a series of fire risk assessments for the Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. The college hosts around 1600 students and 300 staff and spreads across a large site, surrounded by residential housing.
ANS, (Computing)
MESH assisted a company based in Fareham, Hampshire by undertaking a fire risk assessment of its head office used by 20 staff.
Discovery Channel, (Media)
MESH has undertaken the fire risk assessment for Discovery at its head office based in Chiswick West London and assisted the company to assess the risk from fire of all its buildings throughout Europe.
Charities Aid Foundation, (Service)
MESH were employed by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to complete fire risk assessments for its two offices; one based in central London and the other at Kings Hill in Kent.
BA Thorne, (warehousing)
MESH responded at short notice to complete a fire risk assessment for a premises in Redditch. The assessment covered a building used for warehousing and office use.
Stress Risk Assessments

MESH were asked to assist the organisation to complete Stress risk assessments for staff identified at risk by Occupational Health.

Docklands, (Financial)
A large office based company in the Docklands area of London asked MESH to undertake a risk assessment on stress amongst a group of its employees.
Whatman International, (Manufacturing)
MESH worked with management and staff at the large Whatman manufacturing facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire to address the issue of stress. Management were concerned that the pressure the business was under was adversely affecting attendance and performance.
National Maritime Musuem, (Service)
MESH was asked to complete a stress assessment on a member of staff working for the National Maritime museum in Greenwich.
Workplace Noise Risk Assessments
Emerson Willis, (Construction)
MESH has undertaken a series of site inspections for Emerson Willis across sites in London; as part of these inspections a series of noise assessments have also been completed.
Saga Group, (Insurance)
MESH were asked to carry out a noise assessment on the company’s call centre in Folkestone, Kent.
The assessment came after staff had complained of the levels of noise and the associated distractions in the call centre.
Ravensbourne College, (Education)
MESH undertook noise monitoring surveys of the workshops at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. The noise survey pinpointed where the problems existed and a report was compiled for management, identifying the necessary actions to be taken.
Frontier Pitts, (Manufacturing)
In response to a HSE request Frontier Pitts employed MESH to up dates the companys noise risk assessments. The noise assessments covered a range of processes that exceeded the second action level of the Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
BATEC International Limited, (Construction)
MESH has undertaken a series of noise assessments in 2008 on behalf of BATEC International Ltd, working on the companies drilling rigs and ground probe plant.
Workplace Risk Assessments
GE Healthcare, (Manufacturing)
The new EHS manager at GE Healthcare, Maidstone ran a gap analysis on the status of the Risk Assessments on the site. As he had decided to use an outside consultant to help close the gaps he asked MESH to assist.
MESH was asked to assist with upgrading the production and engineering based risk assessments for the GE site in Maidstone, Kent at the start of 2010.
Our consultants worked closely with the GE staff to review the key assessments for these departments and took the lead in the creation of over 200 new assessments.
PHC, (Healthcare)
MESH was asked in early 2009 to complete a series of personal assessments for staff working at a company based in both West London and Reading. These assessments covered a number of individuals who had returned to work following periods of absence.
Charities Aid Foundation, (Service)
In 2009 MESH has undertaken a series of risk assessments on behalf of the Charities Aid Foundation, including general workplace, fire and stress assessments.
South African Airways, (Aviation)
MESH was employed by South African Airways to undertake a series of risk assessments covering its main activities at Heathrow airport. This involved making an assessment of all activities including those that involved working airside in the baggage handling and working around the airplanes.

MESH was asked to undertake workplace risk assessments and COSHH assessments for Advisory Services Kent (part of Kent County Council) in 2009.
